A space for reflection, growth and change.

Dervla Shannahan, PhD

I have always been fascinated by how people make sense of their lives and our human capacity to grow and heal. I was drawn to psychoanalytic theory in my early 20s and my pre-clinical training began at the Philadelphia Association in London, exploring the legacy of Laing and therapeutic communities. Years later, I completed my clinical training at Severnside Institute of Psychotherapy in Bristol, qualifying as a psychodynamic psychotherapist in 2016. I am registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council and draw on a range of psychotherapeutic traditions, somatic and psychological tools in my private practice.

In addition to my clinical training, I hold a PhD in ethnography from Goldsmiths University of London, focused on how people make meaning collectively. I am currently completing an MA in Applied Neuroscience at King's College London, integrating neuroscience insights into therapeutic practice. I have lived across multiple continents and worked with clients from many different cultural backgrounds. My clinical approach is culturally informed and aware of how social contexts shape our inner lives. I am experienced working across time zones and can accommodate clients internationally. I specialise in relationships, families and life transitions, and am equipped to effectively treat a vast range of issues. If you are navigating something not mentioned on my site, you are welcome to contact me and find out if I can help or refer you to a colleague.

I work from two private clinic rooms in Clifton, 3 minutes walk from Clifton Down train station. Sessions take place in a quiet, intentional space in the heart of Clifton—designed for privacy and reflection. I also work online and can accommodate clients internationally. Sessions are available during the day and limited evenings. I offer once or twice weekly sessions, on a short or longer-term basis, depending on your treatment needs. I recommend starting with an initial consultation to see if working together resonates.

Why Psychodynamic?

My approach traces how your past shapes your present, not to dwell on it, but to free you from repeating it. Sessions are collaborative and tailored entirely to you, grounded in whatever you feel like sharing while staying oriented toward where you want to go.
